Sophia James kicks off our Urban News Roundups for 2012 with a look at Boy Better Know artist Frisco’s Mark Duggan tribute and a report into police racial discrimination against Urban Music..

Mark Duggan Tribute by Frisco

The artist Frisco who is a member of Boy Better Know released the music video tribute in memory of Mark Duggan, the victim of a police shooting which lead to the august riots; other fallen soldiers were also tribute towards the end of the track.

Frisco’s lyrics, the media portray you as an angry man, I get mad cus I know you was a family man show that he wants people to know what the real Mark Duggan was like and that the media portray him otherwise.

Experts accuse police of racial discrimination against urban music scene

Well well well, it’s no surprise that these allegations have been made, with The Guardian releasing a report on the 9th of January highlighting the issue.

The claims flared due to a risk assessment form called the, 696 whereby names of artists performing are disclosed.

At a recent large scale urban event, 18 performers and a group of young people on work experience were searched for weapons. Airport style security scanners were used.

The high end booking agent told the Guardian:

It is definitely racist, it is definitely not fair. The problem is that it reverberates through young people, they go to different types of events, they see that at indie events they are not treated like this. It just antagonizes them.

MP, John Whittingdale has called the form discriminatory and draconian and has called for it to be scrapped completely.

Noel Clarke cast to star in Star Trek 2 movie

Yes that’s right, Noel Clarke will be gracing our screens in the movie which is scheduled for release in May 2013. His role will be a family man with a wife and young daughter but the rest is a mystery.

He will certainly bring in a wider audience, and I can tell you he might just have persuaded me to actually watch Star Trek!
Well known not only for acting writing and directing, he is most famous among the UK urban scene for Kidulthood and Adulthood. It’s definitely inspired and started a whole new genre of British films and programs, with many similar ones following such as Top Boy and One Day.

Idris Elba wins golden globe

The British actor took home the award for his role in the BBC drama Luther.

He won over actors such as Hugh Bonneville of Downton Abbey, Bill Nighy of Page Eight, Dominic West of The Hour and William Hurt of Too Big to Fail.
Elba had also appeared in The Wire, The Office and the film Thor.

It’s no surprise that the hunk had also been selected on People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive list and even considers himself to be the next black James Bond!
So congratulations Idris for winning the Actor in a Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television award!

To pick this album is a big deal its a classic a genre defining piece, I was sat at home going mad, twitter was going mad click to listen again.

My Tram Experience: Shocking video of a racist mother goes viral and leads to her arrest

British woman on London transport complaining that Britain is nothing now that ethnic minorities are in her country.

After a day of trending on Twitter police have announced that a woman was arrested for a racially aggravated public order offence in relation to this video filmed by a commuter whilst traveling on the London transport network, and uploaded to YouTube ( under the username ladyk89 ). The womans racially charged rant caused outrage on the tram and attracted comment from TV personality and journalist Piers Morgan who tweeted:

“Very encouraged by level of outrage on here to the #MyTramExperience video. Britain is so much better than that vile bigoted creature.”

C4′s launched Top Boy this week to massive acclaim and enthusiasm from the urban music scene. The drama music artists stars Kano, Asher D and as countless others. Well firstly a lot of the artists are out and about touring the UK at the moment With Ed Sheeran, Wretch 32, Skepta, Jessie J and Katy B out on the road and taking with them the finest in the uk underground with them, there are still lots of dates left so go check and support.

Twitter went off on Monday night when the Motive boys dropped their The ‘Ultimate’ Otis” a very comedic but essentially clever take of all the UK ‘Otis’ covers with skits covering EnglishFrank, Sneakbo, Giggs and OG Niki to name just a few, whilst it is a very funny video the boys deserve a big hand for the writing as some of the bars are just unbelievable.

BBC Children in Need song goes urban!

The beginning of the week saw BBC Children In Need campaign for 2011, This years song TearDrops originally by Massive Attack has been brought to you by ‘The Collective’ which involves Tulisa,Chipmunk, Ed Sheeran and other urban acts. The track has had an urban makeover and the chorus involves Tulisa really showing off her stunning vocals and the video that follows it is also stunning.

Darcus Howe: Angry old West-Indian negro | BBC News Interview on London Riots

Darcus Howe is a writer (columnist in The Voice newspaper) and broadcaster. He came to prominence after organising mass marches against the racist aftermath of the 1981 New Cross fire. He was interviewed by the BBC News channel to comment on the recent riots and looting that occurred both in London and across the UK

Howe states that the events occurred because of deep rooted problems faced by young people in the poor communities (both black and white) of across the UK and becomes increasingly irritated by the questions of the BBC journalist as she suggests that that Howe is sympathetic to the looters, and that he even took part in a past riot. Howe goes on to say that the interviewer should Have some respect for an old West Indian negro and stop accusing me of being a rioter before the interview is abruptly ended.

Subsequently the BBC apologised to those offended by the poorly phrased questions addressed to Darcus Howe.
